ARTIST’S STATEMENT 

I paint for the shear joy of the challenge of capturing a feeling and communicating it to a viewer.  I paint a variety of subjects from landscapes to florals, still life and abstracts.  I also paint over the range from representational to totally abstract.  Each is viewed as an opportunity and a challenge to achieve my objective.

I use artistic license to amplify some elements of the subject to better communicate the essential emotion.  Examples are exaggerated colors to help set a mood, powerful contrasts of light and dark to focus attention, unique perspectives to create interest, and diverse textures to please the eye as well as to create compelling interest. My intent is to convey an emotion to be shared by the viewer.

 I work with watercolor exclusively, sometimes augmented with opaque pigments such as gouache and inks.  Watercolor offers a unique spontaneity as pigments blend on wet paper to mimic the infinite diversity and subtleties found in nature.  If a viewer experiences a compelling mood, an emotional excitement, and sustained interest, I have achieved a measure of success.

Ron is self-taught.  He has relied on independent studies and workshops with contemporary watercolorists with national and international reputations such as Tony Couch, Zoltan Szabo, Frank Webb, Dale Laitinen, Don Andrews, Mel Stabin, Tony van Hasselt, Jane Hofstetter, George James and Frank Francese.  Ron is a member of the California Watercolor Association, the Santa Clara Valley Watercolor Society and the Silicon Valley Society of Local Artists.  He has sold his work locally as a participant in Silicon Valley Open Studios.  On an ongoing basis he offers his work for sale through an online gallery at www.RonsArtGallery.com.
